Again 27, a turning point

2006/10/9

Is 27 the age when you start to realize for the first time life is going so fast? You begin to freak out because 30 seems so near. You feel like you need to make decisions, quickly. To make up your life. Be what you need to be before it’s to late. Maybe it’s just the society right now, or maybe it’s just me. 27 is somewhat special because you have learned about yourself in the real world. School is usually finished, you live by your own, you’ve gained experience in the work world. You’ve tried different things and you start to know a little bit more about what you like and what you don’t. You make more precise choices about your life. Or you want to.

It’s the late twenties crisis. In our accelerated culture it’s the equivalent to what used to be a mid-life crises. Naive visions begin to wilt, and we must find the peace that comes with the smaller decisions, being content with limitations instead of rebelling against them so much. Accepting our weak points and learning from them instead of thinking we can do everything.

Obviously, this was my 27 experience. To be honest, I couldn’t wait for 30, and now that it’s happened it seems silly to have worried at all. In our culture were allowed to stay young longer, and being a more level headed young is much easier than carrying those pent-up frustrations of youth.
